I’d like to talk about some of the parallels in the import industry to the minitruck scene. You see, I have the benefit of being able to look at this from both sides, as I’ve owned both. A lot of times, I hear some of the guys in the import scene talk down to each other regarding their choices of how to go about customizing their rides, and what they don’t realize, is that this same conflict happened exactly the same way a few years back, but with minitrucks playing the starring roles. Mini’s were being built with wild body kits, crazy bodymods, that for the most part, made the trucks look more like they were ready to be launched off an aircraft carrier than cruise down the strip. Sound familiar? It is. Later along, a few guys started a trend towards building trucks with a much cleaner look, paying much more attention to detail, and in the end, creating very low, clean, smooth, machines, and a trend that has carried through to today. Now…where is this going? Hopefully, if the import guys can wake up and see what’s going on, they’ll start going in the same direction as the mintruckers, who got the advantage of a few years head start on us. The aftermarket for imports is 5 times the size that it ever was for minis, but the guys with the minis always something to do with two things…a Sawzall, and balls…okay, that’s 3 things, but whose counting! These guys realized that to be truly different, you sometimes have to reach deep into yourself, and do something original. I really love to see a great motor-swapped import, with a turbo, or a clean car, with a lot of body mods, and a great paint scheme. The problem is, we can’t seem to get these two camps to meet! If your going to build a show car, remember…it’s still a car, and it still has a motor! And if a fast car is your thing, what’s so wrong with making it a great looking fast car that turns heads with its looks, and then spins them around with a huge turbo, and a front mount intercooler!
I’m going to try my best to get these groups together, because I
have a feeling that when the clean, body modded, beautiful paint job guy,
meets the motor-swap, turbo guy…it’s going to result in something special…and
then look out Sawzall, balls guy!
This is dedicated to the loss of our brother Bobby. He always wanted to have the best of both those worlds in his car, and I’ll never forget him.
